The 12th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 was a high-profile clash between the five-time champions Mumbai Indians and the MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on April 8.

Dhoni won the toss and elected to field first. Coming in to bat, Mumbai Indians got off to a decent start as Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan looked to be in good flow. Rohit amassed 21, whereas Kishan scored 32, however, the top-order came crumbling down after wickets were taken in quick succession.

By the end of the first innings, Kishan remained the highest run-getter for Mumbai in the first innings (32). Despite the rocky performance from the middle order, Mumbai managed to post 157/8 on the board.

In the second innings, Mumbai Indians got off to a good start as Devon Conway was sent back to the pavilion for a duck. However, the early pressure was absorbed in superb fashion by man-in-form Ruturaj Gaikwad.

Gaikwad played with resilience as he remained unbeaten, but it was the knock of Ajinkya Rahane that was integral for the four-time champions. Rahane came in to bat after the fall of the first wicket, and the veteran Indian batter took the fight back to their opponents.

The 34-year-old’s explosive knock saw him score 61 runs in just 27 deliveries. His performance was key for Chennai as they won the high-profile match; coming in as an impact player, Ambati Rayudu scored unbeaten 20 off 16 balls, and Gaikwad’s unbeaten 40 propelled the visitors to a win by seven wickets.

Mumbai Indians' woes continue as they registered their second loss of the season. The side finished 10th in the IPL points table in 2022 and hoped for a better outcome in the ongoing tournament. However, that has not been the case so far.
