Not long ago, the world witnessed the conflict between the two legends of the game in the form of Sourav Ganguly and Virat Kohli. Notably, both the Indian cricketers had refused to shake hands with each other in Bengaluru. Moreover, in a rather incredible turnaround of events, Kohli and Ganguly went on to embrace each other which will surely melt the heart of the cricket fans. The moment took place after Delhi Capitals (DC) humbled Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by seven wickets at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.
Prior to this development between the two Indian cricket superstars, after the controversial 'no handshake' saga erupted, the prolific modern great had unfollowed one of the most successful skippers of Indian cricket, Sourav Ganguly from his social media handles. In a tit-for-tat move, 'Dada' returned the favour by unfollowing Kohli back. Notably, the conflict between the two emerged when Ganguly was the President of the BCCI and Virat Kohli stepped down from the T20I captaincy.
Thereafter, the Delhi-based batter left the ODI captaincy as well. And eventually, Kohli stepped down from captaincy in Tests post their defeat against South Africa, back in 2022, when India were touring the African nation. While the rift was seemingly opening up in the public domain, several former cricketers offered their take on it. Interestingly enough, one of them was the Australian legend, Shane Watson.
Virat, when he’s like that, that’s when he’s at his absolute best: Watson
Watson opined that when one sees Virat Kohli in a rather pumped-up and aggressive mode on the field, no opposition wants to clash with him at that juncture. The major reason he revealed supporting his statement by saying that Kohli is at his best when he is challenged by the opponent and when he is all pumped up to take down the opposition in a cut-throat battle on the field.
"But there was definitely some fire in Virat’s belly, that’s for sure. For an opposition point of view, that’s the last thing you need as well. Virat, when he’s like that, that’s when he’s at his absolute best. Whatever reason that was, I’m not exactly sure,” Watson said on The Grade Cricketer podcast.
Additionally, Watson did not hold back from deeming this saga as rumour mongering and nothing beyond. Furthermore, he also iterated that he was not sure about the turn of events between Kohli and Ganguly and he will be better to keep away from those kinds of issues.
“It could be rumour mongering, but I’m not sure. So, it’s not something I want to get involved in," Shane Watson concluded.
Notably, Virat Kohli has been in scintillating form in the ongoing IPL 2023. The RCB batter has given some fiery starts to his side as an opener along with skipper, Faf du Plessis. Currently, RCB are placed in the fifth spot with ten points on the IPL points tally. The Royal Challengers Bangalore will now play the Mumbai Indians next in their den at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on May 9.
