Irfan Pathan celebrated as one of India’s most talented swing bowler

Pathan was widely regarded as the finest swing and seam bowler to emerge from India since former captain Kapil Dev. In December 2003, he made his Test debut in Australia at the age of 19. His quick bowling and ability to trouble big hitters with his left-arm swing garnered a lot of attention since his debut.

The Baroda-born cricketer’s spectacular swing and impressive performances made him resemble Pakistan great Wasim Akram. Pathan made a name for himself after grabbing a hat-trick in the opening over of a Test match against Pakistan in Karachi early in 2006 and became the only bowler to do so. His good run of form was short-lived, as his ability to take wickets diminished and he gradually lost pace and swing after the beginning of 2006.

Despite his continuous form with the bat, Pathan was omitted by the team by the end of 2006, both in Tests and ODIs. He did not receive a place in the squad again until the first-ever 2007 World Twenty20. Notably, he was part of the team that took home the 2007 ICC Twenty20 World Cup and 2013 ICC Champions Trophy.

Pathan averaged 31.57 for 1105 runs in 29 Tests, 23.39 for 1544 runs in 120 ODIs, and 24.57 for 172 runs in 24 T20Is. He claimed 100 Test wickets at 32.26, 173 ODI wickets at 29.73, and 28 T20I wickets at 22.07. The 39-year-old made his final international appearance in the 2012 T20 World Cup against South Africa in Colombo.
