ODI World Cup 2023: Marcus Stoinis' controversial dismissal puts Australia in trouble against South Africa

Australia and South Africa are squaring off in the tenth game of the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023. Chasing 312, Australia got off to worst possible start, as they lost half their side for 65 runs. At seven, the all-rounder Marcus Stoinis came in to bat, and he, too, was sent packing cheaply. The Aussie was facing the second ball of the 18th over by Kagiso Rabada, which was straying down the leg.

The South African team made an appeal, but the on-field umpire remained still. Rabada convinced skipper Temba Bavuma for an appeal, and DRS showed clear knick as the ball passed the glove and the third umpire thought it was in contact, and Stoinis had to leave the crease .

After the third umpire confirmed Stoinis as 'Out' on the big screen, he seemed to be in disbelief. However, he had no option but to respect the umpire's decision and scored five runs off four balls during his stay at the crease. Currently, Australian side is in all sorts of trouble, as Marnus Labuschagne and Mitchell Starc are building a partnership to keep the contest alive.

Earlier in the clash, South African batters managed to bat well, courtesy of a brilliant century by Quinton de Kock. The keeper-batter scored 109 off 106 balls, before he played one onto the stumps while trying to play a reverse sweep off Glenn Maxwell. Aiden Markram (56 off 46 balls) also played well, and helped the Proteas in reaching in excess of 300.

During the chase, Lungi Ngidi and Marco Jansen took wickets of openers Mitchell Marsh and David Warner in the sixth and seventh over, respectively. Rabada added injury to assault, as Steven Smith was caught in front of the stumps. Initially, Smith's dismissal was sent to the third umpire, but TV replay suggested 'three-reds' to sent him back to the pavilion. Rabada continued his attack, as he got the better of Josh Inglis with a pearler. The fifth wicket came in the form of Maxwell, who was caught and bowled by left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj in the seventeenth over.
