Australia registered a convincing eight-wicket win over Bangladesh in their final league stage encounter in the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup contested at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune on November 11. Pat Cummins, the Australian captain, invited Bangladesh to bat first after winning the toss. The decision first appeared to backfire on the Aussies as they conceded 300-plus runs in allotted overs.
Meanwhile, Aussie batters put forth a stunning batting display and comfortably chased down the target with 32 balls to spare. Chasing the mammoth 307-run target, Australia made the worst possible start losing the wicket of opener Travis Head (10), letting Bangladesh earn a major breakthrough.
However, David Warner (53) and Mitchell Marsh produced a 120-run partnership which saw Australia were firmly in control. Marsh then stitched an unbeaten 175-run with ace batter Steven Smith and led Australia all the way for a comfortable win before the much-anticipated semifinal clash against South Africa in Kolkata. Marsh smashed his way to an unbeaten 177 off 132 balls while Smith scored 63* off just 64 deliveries.
Earlier, Bangladesh posted 306, their first 300-plus score in the ongoing World Cup after being put to bat first. Tanzid Hasan Tamim and Litton Das produced a solid start with a 76-run partnership before Sean Abbott dismissed the Tamim for 36 runs. The wicketkeeper-batter then attempted to form a crucial stand with Najmul Hossain Shanto, who captained the Bangla Tigers in the absence of regular skipper Shakib Al Hasan. However, he was caught by Marnus Labuschagne while Adam Zampa’s delivery drifted onto the middle and leg.
Shanto went on to score 45 runs before getting run out by Labuschagne when Bangladesh were 170/3. Towhid Hridoy was the standout batter of Bangladesh who brought up the first half-century in the match. He amassed 74 off 79 deliveries, with the help of five boundaries and two maximums. Abbott and Zampa grabbed two each while Marcus Stoinis made one scalp for the five-time champions.
