The 37th match of the ongoing ODI World Cup took place at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata, where India and South Africa faced off. India won the toss and chose to bat first.
Rohit Sharma, the Indian captain, started strongly, attacking the Proteas bowlers right from the beginning. The team reached 62 runs in just the sixth over, thanks to Rohit's brilliant knock of 40 runs off 24 balls, including six fours and two sixes. However, he was eventually dismissed by Kagiso Rabada.
After Rohit's dismissal, Virat Kohli joined opener Shubman Gill at the crease. Unfortunately, Gill was also dismissed soon after by a superb delivery from Keshav Maharaj. The ball evaded the outside edge of Gill's bat and crashed onto the off stump.
Shreyas Iyer then came in to partner with Kohli in the middle. They took their time initially but soon started playing their shots fluently once they settled in. Shreyas, in particular, took on the bowlers and hit several boundaries during the middle overs, bringing up back-to-back fifties. He was eventually dismissed after scoring 77 runs off 87 balls.
Kohli, on the other hand, continued to play in his own zone and ended up scoring his 49th ODI century, equalling Sachin Tendulkar's record. He remained not out on 101 runs. Suryakumar Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja also played quick cameos towards the end to help India reach a total of 326.
Chasing the target, the South African batters struggled against India's disciplined and in-form bowling lineup. They kept losing wickets at regular intervals and failed to make any significant contributions with the bat. Marco Jansen was the highest run-scorer for his team with just 14 runs, highlighting the poor batting performance of the South Africans.
Ravindra Jadeja was the standout bowler, taking five crucial wickets to derail South Africa's chase. India won the match by a massive margin of 243 runs. Mohammad Shami and Kuldeep Yadav also contributed with two wickets each, while Mohammad Siraj took one wicket.
