It was a rare moment of vulnerability for one of cricket's most respected and composed figures when MS Dhoni, the former India captain and the driving force behind Chennai Super Kings (CSK) success in the Indian Premier League (IPL), broke down as he spoke about the franchise's tough times.
Dhoni, who retired from international cricket in 2020 and is potentially playing his final IPL season in 2024, recently handed over the captaincy to young Ruturaj Gaikwad. Under Dhoni's leadership, the Yellow Army lifted the IPL trophy a record five times, the last being in the 2023 edition.

MS Dhoni remembers the tough days
CSK's journey has not been without challenges. In a throwback video that has gone viral, an emotional Dhoni can be seen struggling to control his tears. He recollected the tough days the franchise faced when they were banned from the IPL for two years (2016 and 2017) due to the alleged spot-fixing and betting activities.
"The two years that we were not part of IPL, our fans stood by us, and our fan following increased. That was the tough time and I feel I was waiting for the right time for all of us to come together as a franchise that is known for cricket," Dhoni says in a video posted on Twitter.
The reason why we love him unconditionally is this.. He is not just another cricketer for us.. He loves Chennai team and fans #Dhoni #Thala #CSK 💛💛💛 We are proud CSK fans pic.twitter.com/MJLeEwoAH7

The legendary cricketer paused to take a sip of water and was overwhelmed by remembering the darkest period of the franchise. Despite the setback, Dhoni and his team emerged stronger, returning to the IPL in the 2018 edition, and quickly reclaimed their position as one of the most formidable and beloved franchises in the league.
