March 27, 2024, was a night where the entire cricketing fraternity witnessed an onslaught by batters, decimating bowlers left, right and centre. This mind-boggling spectacle was witnessed in none other than Match 8 of the seventeenth edition of the IPL, a match played between the Sunrisers Hyderabad and the Mumbai Indians.

Hardik Pandya won the toss and elected to field first. Who would've possibly known what was in store for them over the next 85–90 minutes? What followed once the match commenced was utter demolition — with every other batter barring Mayank Agarwal batting at a strike-rate of 150 or above. Southpaws Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma couldn't have provided a better start for the home team, with them obliterating the bowling attack by thwarting 62(24) and 63(23), respectively.

The next couple of batters to follow, Aiden Markram and Heinrich Klaasen, provided the impetus from overs 11 to 20, with them smashing their way through to an unbeaten 116-run partnership off just 55 deliveries, with the bulk of the damage being inflicted by the latter, amassing 80 off 34, an innings entailing four fours and seven sixes.

On the third delivery of the final over, SRH finally surpassed RCB's 11-year-old record with Klaasen launching the ball to the deep midwicket fence, which just about evaded the boundary rider and went for a maximum, with SRH crossing RCB'S record of 263, which they had stockpiled in their match against the Pune Warriors India, which came way back in 2013. SRH ended their innings on 277/3, with them holding the record for the highest score in the IPL now.

Meanwhile, RCB's took to X to congratulate the Sunrisers, with quite a witty tweet, which included the names of Head as well as Klaasen in quite a humorously-worded form. The tweet also included, “Sharmao mat, records are meant to be broken (Don't be shy, records are meant to be broken).” They congratulated the entire unit of SRH, in light of their outstanding achievement, which would require something absolutely out-of-the-world for it to be encroached.
