Shubman Gill's dream run continues, surpasses Rohit Sharma for most number of sixes in 2023
Shubman Gill is being touted as India's future batting superstar after having a fantastic start to his career.
Shubman Gill was identified as a generational talent very early in his career. After making his international debut in 2019, the Punjab batter has done justice to his potential thus far.
Especially in 2023, Shubman has been a cut above the rest, scoring heaps of runs across formats while playing copybook cricket. He is the highest run-getter for India in international cricket this year. Shubman also overtook Indian captain Rohit Sharma's tally of 43 sixes, which is the highest in international cricket this year by any batter from a full-member nation.
After scoring a scintillating 63-ball 74 in the first ODI against Australia in Mohali to help India win by five wickets, all eyes were on the 24-year-old in the second game in Indore on Sunday, September 24. Shubman started cautiously, scoring nine from the first 19 balls he faced after Australia opted to field first. However, he cut loose in the ninth over, hitting a four and a six off Sean Abbott. Shubman followed it up with another four and six in the next over, bowled by Cameron Green. The pull shot off Green, which went the distance, took the right-handed batter to 44 international sixes in 2023 before rain stopped play.
Ruturaj Gaikwad departs cheaply, Shreyas Iyer shows his class
After scoring a well-compiled half-century in the first ODI, Ruturaj Gaikwad couldn't follow it up as he was dismissed for just eight by Josh Hazlewood. Shreyas Iyer, who was run out in the first game, got another opportunity to bat at No. 3.
The Mumbai batter batted with courage and hit a flurry of boundaries to get to his fifty. Shreyas will hope to make the most of the quickfire start he has got and score a big one. This is already his highest score since returning from injury.
