Australia beat Afghanistan by just four runs in the 38th match of the T20 World Cup 2022 to remain in the race for a semi-final spot. Australia jumped to the second spot with seven points from five games but need England to lose their last game to progress to the last four from Super 12 Group 1. Australia posted a challenging 168/8 total while batting first after a brilliant half-century from Glenn Maxwell. Afghanistan put up a late comeback fight with Rashid Khan smashing unbeaten 48 runs off 23 balls but fell four runs short of the target.

Afghanistan skipper Mohammad Nabi won the toss and elected to bowl first at the Adelaide Oval. Australia brought in Cameron Green in the place of injured captain Aaron Finch but the young all-rounder was dismissed on just three runs by Fazalhaq Farooqui in the third over. David Warner played well for 25 runs off 18 balls but once again failed to convert it into a big knock. 

Naveen-ul-Haq dismissed both Warner and Steven Smith in the sixth over to put pressure on the hosts. But Mitchell Marsh and Marcus Stoinis stabilized Australia's innings to keep their hopes for a semi-final spot alive. Glenn Maxwell smashed unbeaten 54 runs off 32 balls to guide Australia to a challenging total of 168/8. For Afghanistan, Naveen-ul-Haq took three wickets and Fazalhaq Farooqi grabbed two for 29.

Australia survive a late Rashid Khan scare

Josh Hazlewood dismissed the Afghan opener Usman Ghani in the third over on just two runs to give Australia a flying start. But Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran avoided early pressure with a 25-run partnership for the second wicket. Kane Richardson dismissed Gurbaz in the sixth over but the next batter Gulbadin Naib and Zadran put up another crucial partnership of 59 runs for the third wicket.

Adam Zampa took two big wickets of Ibrahim Zadran and Najibullah Zadran in the middle overs to shift the momentum of the game for the hosts. Australia seemed on track for a big win but star Afghan all-rounder Rashid Khan smashed unbeaten 48 runs off 23 balls to keep his team's hopes alive till the end. Rashid smashed 16 runs in the last over but Afghanistan fell just four runs short of the target.
