Match 19 of the Super 12 stage in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2022 saw the clash between the defending champions Australia and the Asia Cup 2022 winners Sri Lanka at the Perth Stadium in Perth on Tuesday, October 25. Marcus Stoinis’ aggressive knock of 59* off 18 deliveries helped the Aussies to earn two points in their must-win encounter.

Prior to the match, Australia had a damaged net run rate of negative 4.450 following their massive defeat at the hands of New Zealand in the first match of Super 12. Sri Lanka were put to bat first by the Aussies and they lost a few wickets in clusters.

However, towards the later half of the innings the Lankan Lions gained slight momentum to post a competitive total of 157 in their stipulated 20 overs. In response, the Australians knew they had to not just win but win by a big margin to better their damaged net run rate.

Team Australia win their first match

Skipper Aaron Finch endured a frustrating outing with the bat in the game. Finch could only register 31* off 42 balls, including just one maximum during his stay at the crease.

It was Stoinis who joined the skipper at the crease coming down the order and gave them a ray of hope to better their net run rate. The star all-rounder smacked a few huge ones into the stand and ended up playing a vital knock of 59* runs off 18 balls that included as many as six sixes and four fours at a mammoth strike rate of 327.77.

The match was meant to be for Australia as they were desperate for the win to keep their semi-final hopes alive. The Aussies will look to carry this momentum in their title defence.
