England have managed to make it to the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2022 after beating Sri Lanka by four wickets in their final group stage encounter at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The game went down into the last over after England lost a heap of wickets in the middle overs while Ben Stokes carried his team home with smart batting. With the victory, hosts Australia are eliminated from the mega event while England join New Zealand for the knockouts.

Earlier, Sri Lanka’s decision to bat first seemed perfectly alright as they got to 39 in just the fourth over until Kusal Mendis was dismissed due to an excellent catch. Pathum Nissanka looked in great touch as he kept finding the boundaries regularly while Dhananjaya de Silva and Charith Asalanka could not contribute much. The runs were coming at a good rate with Nissanka in the middle and he reached a half-century in quick time having hit five sixes in his knock.

However, once Nissanka was dismissed for 67 in the 16th over, the incoming batters struggled to get going and could not capitalise on the excellent platform laid. Sam Curran and Mark Wood finished off the innings with some excellent death bowling and restricted Sri Lanka to just 141 for 8 in their 20 overs. Wood went for 3 for 26 in his three overs to be the pick of the bowlers.

England openers provide a blazing start to the run-chase

In reply, England started off aggressively by going after the Sri Lankan bowling in the powerplay and raised to 75 in just the eighth over with no wicket gone. Alex Hales (47) and Jos Buttler (28) put on a show with the bat early and brought down the required run-rate considerably. However, the spinners Wanindu Hasaranga and Dhananjaya de Silva changed things around in a quick time and picked up five wickets.

Ben Stokes and Sam Curran rotated the strike for a while with calculated batting and were happy to not go for the risky shots. Stokes in particular ensured that the game went deep while Curran was dismissed at the wrong time. However, the left-hander held his nerve in the end with Chris Woakes hitting the winning shot.
