[WATCH] 'Look at their facial expressions' - Sonal Dinusha's fun moment after batting whole day to draw Colombo Test

A brief exchange between two Sri Lanka batters at the crease on August 27, 2026, captured the mood of an extraordinary final day at the Sinhalese Sports Club, Colombo. Gamage Sonal Dinusha had spent the entire day batting Sri Lanka to safety after they had followed on, and a moment shared with Lahiru Kumara during their partnership was picked up and circulated widely online.

A clip posted on social media showed Dinusha pointing towards the Indian fielders and speaking to Kumara during their ninth-wicket stand. The incident took place in the 136th over of the Sri Lankan innings with Mohammed Siraj bowling, trying hard to break the partnership.

In the clip, Dinusha is heard saying in Sinhala language, "Look at their facial expressions, Lahiru!". Kumara responded saying, "We don't get to see things like this every day. Not a single one of them is even speaking, mate."

Dinusha and Kumara's ninth-wicket stand that sealed the draw

The moment came during a partnership of 47 runs off 170 balls between Dinusha and Kumara. Kumara contributed 12 off 90 balls across 122 minutes before being dismissed by Ravindra Jadeja. After Kumara's exit, Asitha Fernando stayed with Dinusha for the remaining deliveries, and Sri Lanka finished the day at 429/9 to secure the draw.

India had declared their first innings at 503/9 and enforced the follow-on. Before this match, India had enforced the follow-on against Sri Lanka eight times and won every one of those matches. The Colombo draw was the first occasion Sri Lanka avoided defeat in such a situation against India.

Dinusha's contribution was central to the result. He scored an unbeaten 133 off 264 balls in 420 minutes in the second innings, hitting 8 fours and 2 sixes. He had also scored 103 in Sri Lanka's first innings, making it his third century of the series. His only other completed innings in the series had brought him 84, giving him four scores of fifty or more in as many innings across the two Tests.

Notably, with those twin centuries, Dinusha became only the third countryman after Duleep Mendis and Aravinda de Silva to score a century in both innings of a Test match. He also became just the third batter in history to score twin centuries in a Test after following on. The only other two to achieve that were Vijay Hazare, who scored 116 and 145 for India against Australia in 1948, and Andy Flower, who made 142 and 199 not out for Zimbabwe against South Africa in 2001.

All of this came in only Dinusha's fifth Test match. He made his Test debut on June 25, 2025, against Bangladesh. India won the two-match series 1-0, having beaten Sri Lanka by 165 runs in the first Test at Galle.
