Day 2 of the World Test Championship final between India and Australia saw the latter pick up right where they left off. Steve Smith and Travis Head built upon their fabulous knocks from Day 1 as the former scored 121 runs in 268 balls, whereas Head amassed 163 runs in 174 deliveries.

Furthermore, a late push of 48 runs by Alex Carey helped the Aussies notch up a mammoth 469 runs on the board in the first innings. It was the spell of Mohammed Siraj that helped India limit their opponents. The star pacer took four wickets, whereas Mohammed Shami and Shardul Thakur took two wickets each, with Ravindra Jadeja striking once.

Coming in to bat, the Indian team got off to the worst of starts to their first innings, as the top-order of the side crumbled under the relentless pressure of Australia’s bowling attack. Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Scott Boland, and Nathan Lyon overpowered India.

Shubman Gill and skipper Rohit Sharma failed to make an impact on the game, as Gill was sent packing for 13 runs and Rohit only managed to score 15 runs. Furthermore, as Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli took the onus upon themselves, they too failed to make a mark.

Pujara was dismissed for 14 runs by Cameron Green, with Kohli also scoring 14 runs before he was sent back to the pavilion. Ravindra Jadeja did play a brilliant knock under pressure, as the star all-rounder amassed 48 runs in 51 deliveries. By the end of Day 2, KS Bharat and veteran batter Ajinkya Rahane stood at the crease.

Rahane remains unbeaten at 29 runs in 71 deliveries, with Bharat having scored 5* runs in 14 balls. Team India scored 151/5 by the time stumps were called on Day 2 of the WTC final, and with the Aussies in commanding position, it could be interesting to see how India bounce back on Day 3.
