WTC Final 2025: Top 10 Memes from SA vs AUS, WTC Final 2025
South Africa lifted their first ICC trophy in 27 years.
South Africa, under the leadership of Temba Bavuma, created history as they defeated the strong Australians at the Home of Cricket, winning the ICC World Test Championship Final by five wickets at Lord’s. The Proteas' story in ICC tournaments has been a series of disappointing defeats and near misses. However, the side continued an eight-match unbeaten Test run and lifted the prestigious Test mace.
Facing the reigning champions, South Africa were never favourites but fought their way out to lift their first ICC title in 27 years. The match began with Australia posting 212 in the first innings after being asked to bat first. Despite facing initial hiccups, it was the partnership between Steven Smith and Beau Webster that anchored the innings on the opening day.
For the Proteas, Kagiso Rabada picked a sensational five-wicket haul. Despite this advantage, the Proteas failed with the bat, bundled out for a mere 138, with captain Bavuma (36) and David Bedingham (45) the only fighting contributions. Meanwhile, Australian skipper Pat Cummins finished with 6 for 28, putting the opposition on the back foot. In their second innings, Cummins & Co. managed 207, thanks to an unbeaten knock of 58 from Mitchell Starc. Rabada and Lungi Ngidi shared seven wickets between them to ensure the target remained under 300.
Chasing 282, Aiden Markram played the best knock of his life, smashing 136 off 207 balls. The vice-captain, along with skipper Bavuma (66), stitched a match-winning 147-run stand. When Markram fell with just six runs required, he walked off to a standing ovation. Wicketkeeper-batter Kyle Verreynne drove the final ball through the covers to seal the victory and give South Africa their first WTC title. Markram was awarded the Player of the Match for his heroics with the bat and handy bowling.
