It has so far been a dreadful IPL 2020 campaign for three-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK). After suffering five losses in seven games, CSK are currently sitting at the sixth place in the points table. Their performance wasn’t something that CSK fans would’ve imagined before the start of the tournament.

Royal Challengers Bangalore, on Saturday, plunged more misery on CSK by handing them a 37-run drubbing. Skipper Virat Kohli, leading his team from the front, played a captain’s knock of unbeaten 90 off just 52 deliveries to help his side post a challenging total of 169 runs on the scoreboard board.

In response, the CSK batting force failed to accelerate their run-chase yet again. The Chennai side kept losing wickets at regular intervals, with Ambati Rayudu trying to save CSK’s sinking ship at the other end. Debutant Narayan Jagadeesan, scoring 33 off 28 deliveries, assisted Rayudu well but not a single CSK batsman was able to put his foot on the gas pedal.

CSK have managed to win just two games so far

CSK, in their situated 20 overs, managed to amass just 132 runs on the board and their woeful run continued with the 37-run defeat. Following CSK’s fifth loss of the season, fans lambasted the franchise on Twitter. Several fans also asked the team management to bring back Suresh Raina into the Playing XI.  Raina had flown to UAE with other CSK members but he returned to India a few days before the start of IPL 2020.

Raina, the vice-captain of the CSK side and one of the leading run-scorers in the IPL, had stunned everyone by pulling out of the tournament ahead of the start of the new season. He is currently in India but CSK fans have been urging the management to persuade him to come back. According to several fans, CSK batting force is failing to fire in the absence of Raina.

Since the inception of the IPL in 2008, Raina has been an integral part of the CSK set-up. His consistency and runs in the tournament has also earned him the tag ‘Mr IPL’. Chinna Thala’s truancy from the CSK set-up has undoubtedly dented their batting artillery. If Dhoni’s men register a couple of more losses this season, their chances of qualifying for the Playoffs will be almost nil.
