The cricketing fraternity is still recovering from the blow of the Australian ball-tampering scandal. As a damage control measure, county side Somerset has chosen Matt Renshaw to fill in the shoes of Cameron Bancroft in the upcoming season of County Cricket.

The latter was earlier suspended by Cricket Australia (CA) from international Cricket for nine months .22-year-old Renshaw, who boasts of impressive figures in both Tests as well as First-Class games, is reportedly delighted at his new role. He will be joining Somerset on Friday and will play for the side till June 30, followed by another stint for the side from August to the end of the season. Till date, the youngster has 636 runs in 11 Tests and 2522 runs at an average 39.40 in 36 first-class games to his name.

Matt Renshaw named as the new addition to Somerset side

As reported by Cricbuzz, the director of Cricket, Andy Hurry is confident of the environment in Somerset being suitable for Renshaw to flourish in the setup. Talking about the appointment, Hurry said, “It has been important for us to act swiftly, but to remain pragmatic in identifying the best fit for our needs and I am delighted that we have signed Matt. Coming to us off the back of a title-winning Sheffield Shield season and having made a number of significant contributions with the bat, including three hundreds in the last five games, he will be arriving with us with a huge amount of confidence.”

Hurry went on to express faith in Renshaw’s abilities and said, “He is a player who is highly driven to succeed and has demonstrated the ability to bat for long periods of time, but he also has the ability to move through the gears. He is a player of quality, is on an upward trajectory and we feel that he will certainly flourish in our environment.”

Young Matt Renshaw, quite understandably, is excited at the prospect of a new venture in his cricketing career. Reacting to the news, Renshaw said, “I’m delighted to have the opportunity to play alongside some very experienced players and the exciting young talent that is coming through at Taunton. I’ve heard a lot of good things about the Club and I understand that I will be following in the footsteps of some outstanding Australian batsmen. It will be a new challenge for me but it’s one that I’m really looking forward to.”[interaction id=”5aca2dc20b450df577763135”]
