2017 started on an unpleasant note for the top BCCI officials. The apex Indian court had a massive crackdown at the functioning of the Indian cricket board. Supreme Court gave a huge setback to the BCCI by sacking its president Anurag Thakur and secretary Ajay Shirke. A show cause notice subsequently issued of mendacity and contempt of court. Both Thakur and Shirke will now get time until January 19 to reply to the Supreme Court.

While the future of the sacked officials remains uncertain, there is a clear need to find the replacements. The Jharkhand Cricket Association (JCA) chief Amitabh Chaudhary, the current Joint Secretary, will take the position of Ajay Shirke. For the top post of the BCCI president, several names are floating at the moment.

The one that stands out, for now, is that of Sourav Ganguly. The former Indian cricketer is hugely revered in the country and is also one of the most successful captains of the national side. Ganguly is the current President of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) and has done commendable work for the state cricket body.

Karnataka State Cricket Association president, Mr. Brijesh Patel, is also in contention for the top role. Patel is also a former national player who represented the country in 1970s. He has been in-charge of the state association since 1999 and has been a key member.

Another contender is Shivlal Yadav. Yadav was named as the interim BCCI President when N Srinivasan had stepped down from the post a year ago. He is also a former national player who represented India between 1979 and 1987.

While the announcement for the president’s post will come shortly, the Supreme Court cleared that a senior vice president of the BCCI who complies with the Lodha Panel’s requirements can chair the meetings till January 19.

The current list of BCCI vice-president includes – ML Nehru (North Zone), Dr G Gangaraju (South Zone), Gautam Roy (East Zone), TC Mathew (West Zone) and CK Khanna (Central Zone). Among these, Dr. G Gangaraju, CK Khanna and ML Nehra are out of the race since they do not qualify for the post as per the Lodha criterion. For the longer run, Sourav Ganguly appears to be the frontrunner for the coveted post.
