The yo-yo fitness Test has become quite a debatable topic among cricketers and cricket pundits. While some feel that the Test, which has to be taken at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore to prove fitness, is important for a place in the team, others oppose this idea and say that one’s talent should not be hampered due to fitness.

In the wake of this debate, former India captain Sourav Ganguly has also given his view. While he has backed the Indian team management to implement the yo-yo test, he also said that the test is not the only criteria for performance. A few days ago, Mohammed Shami failed to clear the test and was thus left out of India’s squad for the one-off Test against Afghanistan.

The test was made compulsory in 2017

“That’s a very good landmark. However, it’s not the only landmark for performance but it is important to pass it. It makes you a fitter side. It makes you a side which is mentally stronger,” Ganguly told Cricbuzz. The yo-yo test was made compulsory for selection in the Indian team in 2017 when India toured Sri Lanka. The decision was taken on the advice of captain Virat Kohli and coach Ravi Shastri.

“You have a certain ability but if you are fit then you can enhance it. That’s why we emphasize on YoYo test. If anyone thinks that this is a one-off thing, he is sadly mistaken. He can take a walk,” Shastri had recently said.

Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, Washington Sundar and Shami are few of the many players who couldn’t pass the test in one attempt and hence had to wait for their place in the team. Shami cleared the test recently, which is why he is now in contention for the Test squad against England.

As for the difficulty of the test, some cricketers say it is very easy to pass, while others day it takes a lot of effort. But whatever it may be, the yo-yo test is here to stay for now.
