The Kolkata Knight Riders are one of the most iconic teams in the Indian Premier League. They have coveted the IPL trophy for a long time before they signed Gautam Gambhir. Gauti, who was appointed the skipper of the side back in 2011 changed the fortunes of the side. He helped them get their hands on the glorious IPL trophy not once, but twice. He was one of the most iconic figures in the team and played an important role in the success.
However, the left-hander, who hit the highest number of fours in IPL till date decided to part his ways with the franchise this season. He desired to get back to the Delhi Daredevils, his home team and the KKR management respected his decision. Gambhir will captain DD this year but at the same time, he left a big hole in the KKR side to be filled.
Have faith in your skipper says, Sourav Ganguly
After the departure of Gambhir, the KKR management is now busy finding a captain for the 11th season of the tournament. The think tank is breaking its head as to who would be the best choice for the role. Amidst all the confusion, former India, and KKR skipper Sourav Ganguly put forward his opinion and had a suggestion for the KKR management.
Gambhir, who took the team thrice to the playoffs apart from the two title glories has now left the fans bewildered with his exit. The new broadcaster for this season, Star Sports also conducted an interview with Sourav Ganguly regarding this issue. A teaser of the show displayed Ganguly with a word of advice for the franchise.
“Consider any great captain, Steve Waugh or Stephen Fleming, for example, you start at one particular stage in your career. And when they did start, it was based on a gut feeling of the team management. And then you see how far the team performs in the next six, seven matches of the season,” said Ganguly in conversation with Jatin Sapru. “But for KKR, one thing they have to do is that the amount of stability they had given to Gautam Gambhir, they have to do the same with the new captain so that he can be free in making his choices,” the former skipper went on to add. KKR officials have so far remained silent on the issue.
Chris Lynn could be an option
Even when coach Jacques Kallis was asked about Lynn’s possibility of taking up the role. “Yes, he is probably one of the candidates but we haven’t yet decided about it. Maybe, we will get to know in the next couple of weeks,” the former Proteas all-rounder said to PTI.
Chris Lynn believes this to be a great opportunity and is ready to take up the responsibility. While Lynn, in an interview with cricket.com.au, expressed his delight on taking up the captain’s role if given an opportunity. “I’d love to, I’d jump at the opportunity,” Lynn said. “We’ve got a really good group at Kolkata. The coaching staff, Simon Katich, Jacques Kallis, Heath Streak … I can relate [easily to] them,” he added.
