Former Indian captain and president of Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) Sourav Ganguly who had received a death threat letter a couple of days ago have lodged a complaint on Tuesday according to Kolkata Police. A senior police officer of Kolkata Police confirmed to PTI that Ganguly has lodged an official complaint at the Thakur Pukur Police Station on Tuesday.

“We are looking into the matter. We are checking whether it’s a genuine or fake letter. Our officers are examining the letter,” the senior officer was quoted as saying. Ganguly received an anonymous death threat letter at his Behala home forbidding him from attending a felicitation function at Midnapore. Ganguly who was in line to become the new BCCI president received the letter on Saturday.

The southpaw was scheduled to visit Midnapore on 19th January for an inter-college cricket meet at the Vidyasagar University. Local sources were quoted in the media that the letter was addressed to Ganguly’s mother Nirupa warning her son against attending the programme where he has been invited as a chief guest.

“Your son is hereby warned not to attend the programme. If he dares to come here, you will not see him again,” is what has been written in the letter.

Confirming this, Ganguly said: “Yes I’ve received the letter on January 7 and I’ve informed this to the police and the organisers. Ganguly though hasn’t decided yet whether he will be attending the function or not. “Let us see, nothing has been decided yet. You all will come to know if I go there,” he said.

West Midnapore district SP Bharati Ghosh said she was unaware of such an incident. The motive behind the letter is still unknown. “We have not been informed about this,” she said.
