Sourav Ganguly to propose Manohar’s name for BCCI president: After backing from the most influential corners of BCCI, Shashank Manohar is almost set to become the new BCCI president. Since the time Sharad Pawar was reported to have told his supporters to back Manohar and Arun Jaitley being convinced of the same by Anurag Thakur, the road was all but ready for Manohar to be back at the helm.

If things are to go as per script the newly elected president of the Cricket Association of Bengal, Sourav Ganguly will propose Shashank Manohar’s candidature from East Zone for the cricket Board’s top post in the upcoming Special General Meeting. Manohar who served as the president of the BCCI between 2008 and 2011, has been vehemently opposed to N Srinivasan, vowing in the past to never return to the BCCI as long as Srinivasan remained there.

Unlike the Board’s AGM in March, where the Pawar group had failed to find sufficient backing from East Zone, Manohar will have several options to choose from – CAB, NCC, Tripura and Jharkhand, when he files his nomination papers for BCCI president’s post. It has been reliably learnt that Sourav is Manohar’s first choice in this regard.

Sourav and Manohar have come a long way since their spat over the pitch in the run-up to the Nagpur Test against Australia in 2004. Manohar was at the helm of the Vidarbha Cricket Association (VCA) at that time and the local curator had produced a green top for the third Test which angered skipper Sourav. The Indian captain’s plea to shave off the grass was ignored and he didn’t play the match citing illness. Australia won the Test by 342 runs in four days to take an unbeatable 2-0 lead in the 4-match series that they eventually won 2-1.

Over the years, the duo have not only mended fences but also developed a healthy respect for each other. The former BCCI boss was among the first to congratulate Sourav after being elected the CAB president on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, BCCI units are eagerly waiting for secretary Anurag Thakur to summon an Special General Meeting (SGM) where the new president will be unveiled – with or without an election. Thakur has until October 5 to announce the SGM date.
