Cricket South Africa (CSA) has announced a strong squad for the tour to West Indies starting in the month of June. The announcement was made on Tuesday, 18th May 2021. The Proteas will play two Tests, and five T20Is in the Caribbean Island.

Off-spinner Prenelan Subrayen has received his maiden call-up in the Test squad. Subrayen has consistently performed well in the domestic tournaments and will be a handy addition to the spin department lending support to Keshav Maharaj. Lizaad Williams is included in the squad for the first time in the longest format after impressing the selectors in the white-ball formats against Pakistan in the recently concluded series.

Ab de Villiers, Faf du Plessis miss out on the T20I and ODI squads

Graeme Smith (CSA) managing director had earlier hinted that AB de Villiers, Chris Morris, Imran Tahir and Faf du Plessis will get their chances to impress the selectors during the West Indies series. But in a shocking move, neither of the four players are included in the squad. After hanging up his boots in Test cricket, former captain du Plessis wanted to prioritize in doing well in white-ball formats, but he too didn’t find a place.

After impressing one and all with his dazzling strokeplay in the IPL, De Villiers was hoping to get selected ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup but he too was snubbed as South African selectors have gone for youth instead of experience. Moreover, the board has confirmed that the superstar batsman will not be making his comeback from retirement.

After being sidelined due to injury during the recently concluded Pakistan series, regular ODI and T20I skipper Temba Bavuma is back to leading the squad. After the West Indies tour, South Africa will travel to Ireland with the same squad to play three T20Is and three ODIs in the month of July. The two tours will be crucial for South Africa as they look to rebuild the squad after failing to impress in the past year or so.

With two T20 World Cups scheduled within a span of one year, South Africa will be keen to see the likes of Janneman Malan, Kyle Verreynne and Lizaad Williams making a mark in the series.
