Sri Lanka and their bowling attack, in particular, has had a jolly good time in the match Test series against South Africa. With pitches ending up as rank turners, the home side were always the side with the advantage going into the series against a South African side without AB de Villiers.

After having suffered a horrendous defeat in the first Test, the South African were looking to bounce back in the second Test. However, as the match stands, it looks like it’s going to be the home side which will knock the Proteas pegs for a victory.

South African opener Dean Elgar believes that the hosts have been street-smart in denying the visitors preparation on spinning tracks in the warm-up game. In the warm-up game, the South Africans faced a very flat pitch which did not aid the spinners.

Dean Elgar and South Africa’s reality check

With Dean Elgar and co practising on those pitches, it was very hard when the reality of the pitches at Galle and at the SSC hit them really hard. The pitches were rank-turners and South Africa were plagued by the Sri Lankan spinners.

Alongside the other claims, Elgar also told that the Board XI that they faced had plenty of seamers, and no spinners suggesting that the Sri Lankans were street-smart in hiding South Africa‘s biggest opponent in the sub-continent.

“The two-day game that we played – all we faced in the top order was just seamers,” he said. “I didn’t face one ball of seam in the whole Test series. That’s pretty street-smart, I’d say. They gave us a flat wicket that didn’t turn, and that’s pretty street-smart. The series starts really before the first ball is bowled.”

South Africa’s loss

He further added, “That gives the batters a lot of confidence, because we are smashing everything. In the Tests, all we faced were spinners on pretty dusty wickets. That’s also the mental aspect, so you have to find a way to deal with that.”

With South African seven down at the stroke of lunch on Day 4 of the second Test, it is evident that the hosts are going away with another victory against the Proteas.
