Sri Lanka has announced a 15-member squad for the first Test against Australia at Pallekele. Since the team is going through the rebuilding phase, the selectors have decided to bring some new faces in the squad. As many as 4 uncapped players have been named in the squad.

Senior batsman Lahiru Thirimanne has been dropped due to his inconsistency over the last couple of seasons. Dasun Shanaka who has been an interesting prospect in the limited-overs format is yet to make his strides into the longest version of the game.

With some of the key personals missing out, the pace bowling unit seemed pretty inexperienced with pacers Vishwa Fernando and Asitha Fernando called from Sri Lanka’s ‘A’ tour to England. The spin department is safe with the experienced Rangana Herath in the side.

Angelo Mathews will lead the squad and Dinesh Chandimal will continue to assist him. Sri Lanka had a miserable tour of England, where they lost the three-match Test series 2-0, 5-match ODI series 3-0 and lost the only T20 international in the tour as well.

A team which has been in the rebuilding phase after the retirement of some of the great players namely Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene will be looking to better their record against Australia. Lanka has defeated Australia just once in Test cricket history out of their 26 Test encounters and they will surely be looking to better their record on their home soil.

Sri Lanka Squad: Angelo Mathews (C), Dinesh Chandimal (VC), Dimuth Karunaratne, Kaushal Silva, Kusal Perera, Kusal Mendis, Dhananjaya de Silva, Roshen Silva, Nuwan Pradeep, Vishwa Fernando, Asitha Fernando, Rangana Herath, Dilruwan Perera, Lakshan Sandakan, Suranga Lakmal
