The most important point to be kept in mind is that the game must be played in the right spirit. Winning or losing must be secondary. A team can work on the tactics to win matches but it is very difficult to regain the trust of the fans if it violates the rules of the game. Parties that are not upholding the spirit of the game or trying to unlawfully tamper with the results of the match deserve to be punished severely and eliminated from the game.

In the Al Jazeera sting operation, two men from Sri Lanka were found to be involved in corruption in cricket. These two men tried to alter the conditions of the pitch ahead of England’s tour in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka cricket ordered an investigation into the matter and suspended the accused with immediate effect.

Tharanga Indika, curator of the Galle International Stadium along with a club player Tharindu Mendis are the two people involved in the matter. “Sri Lanka Cricket decided to suspend with immediate effect the alleged individuals involved in the said incident against whom the ICC is carrying out investigations,” the SLC said in a statement. SLC conducted an emergency meeting immediately after the Al Jazeera documentary was broadcasted on Sunday.

The ICC too stepped into the matter and is looking at it very seriously. It urged SLC to share “all evidence and supporting material” with the investigators. A three-member panel was appointed by the board to probe into the matter and provide measures that would prevent such issues from arising again. The panel headed by Mohan de Silva will include Air Commodore Roshan Biyanwila and Channa Weerakkody. They are expected to submit a report within three days.

The accused men were reportedly discussing the ways to tamper with the pitch before the England series so that the match gets over in four days. This matter is being taken seriously and such issues must be eradicated for the development of the game.
