India wrapped up Sri Lanka’s first innings for just 183 as they picked up 8 wickets in the morning session on the 3rd day of the 2nd Test against Sri Lanka. But the home side returned with stronger efforts after India enforced follow-on with a first-innings lead of 439 runs. Opener Dimuth Karunaratne and Kusal Mendis put on a 191-run stand for the 2nd wicket but Mendis departed towards the end of the day after an aggressive 110-run knock. The pair batted for 51.5 overs, two overs more than Sri Lanka’s first innings.

Here we look at all the stats and records created during the day’s play.

3 – This is the 3rd time Sri Lanka were forced to follow-on in Test cricket at home. Australia enforced the follow-on at Kandy in 1983 while the West Indies enforced in 2010 at Galle.

3 – Last three centuries in Test cricket while following-on are scored by Sri Lankan batsmen. Before Kusal Mendis in this game, Dinesh Chandimal vs England last year and Dimuth Karunaratne in 2014 vs NZ scored centuries while following-on.

5 – Number of times Ravichandran Ashwin has scored a fifty-plus score and picked a 5-wicket haul in the same Test match; the joint 4th most times by any player. Ian Botham, Shakib Al Hasan and Sir Richard Hadlee have done it 11, 7 and 6 times respectively. Malcolm Marshall also did it 5 times.

26 – Number of five-wicket hauls Ravichandran Ashwin has taken in Test cricket; the 2nd most by an Indian player in this format. Anil Kumble has taken 35 five-fers. Ashwin went past Harbhajan Singh (25) with this 5-fer.

32 – Number of matches Ravindra Jadeja took to complete 150 wickets in Test cricket; the 2nd fastest among Indians after Ravichandran Ashwin. Jadeja is also the quickest to reach the milestone among the left-arm bowlers.

191 – Partnership stand between Dimuth Karunaratne and Kusal Mendis is the 2nd highest second wicket stand for Sri Lanka in Tests against India. Their highest 2nd wicket stand vs India was 576 which was also on 5th August way back in 1997.

191 – The Karunaratne and Mendis stand is the highest for Sri Lanka in Tests while following-on. Their previous highest was 142 by Angelo Mathews and Thilan Samaraweera in 2012 against South Africa.

191 – The 191-run stand between Karunaratne and Mendis is the 12th highest stand for any wicket in follow-on innings. This is also the highest partnership in follow-on since 2009.

327 – Runs Dimuth Karunaratne has aggregated in Test cricket in the innings while following-on; the most by any Sri Lankan. Hashan Tillakaratne scored 323 runs when Sri Lanka was forced to follow-on.
