After over a two-month action of the Indian Premier League (IPL), it’s now time for some T20 internationals as Sri Lanka host world champions Australia in a three-match T20I series starting from June 07, 2022. The second and the third encounters will be played on June 08 and June 11 respectively. R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo will stage the first two games while the third and final clash will take place at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Pallekele. Notably, this is Australia’s first visit to the Island national since the year 2016 and they will also contest in five ODIs and two Tests.
The winners of the T20 World Cup 2021, Australia are in great form in this format as they thrashed the Lankan Lions 4-1 back in February this year at home. The five-match series was the first assignment for the Aussies after the victorious T20 World Cup campaign which took place in November 2021. The team from down under also won the solitary T20I against Pakistan in their own backyard in April this year. Some of their players like David Warner, Mitchell Marsh, and Josh Hazlewood have been in great touch in the recently concluded IPL.
Meanwhile, the hosts failed to qualify for the semi-final of the marquee event and then suffered 4-1 and 3-0 defeats against the Aussies and India respectively. Skipper Dasun Shanaka would hope to change the fortunes of his side in this series by winning against the in-form Aaron Finch’s side. Both the teams will also look to start their preparations in full swing with this being another World Cup year.
The global tournament will be played down under in October-November as the season of T20s starts right here. The sides will look to get their balance right as the series presents a perfect opportunity to kick start things with an eye on the bigger picture.
