The situation of South African and Sri Lankan teams is no different at the moment as the African side has faltered in the 50-overs cricket since the 2017 Champions Trophy which they started as the No.1 side. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, has been a poor ODI side in the last one year and so but are carrying the momentum from a 2-0 series win over the Proteas. The visiting side needs to win the series at least by 4-1 to retain their 3rd ranking in ICC ODI rankings while the Lankans need to the series to move close to the 7th ranked Bangladesh.

All the major stats and numbers ahead of the 5-match ODI series between Sri Lanka and South Africa:

0 – Sri Lanka have lost seven of their last eight bilateral ODI series while a 3-match ODI series against Bangladesh at home earlier in 2017 ended in a draw. Interestingly, they won two out of the three ODI tournaments they appeared in this span since defeating Ireland 2-0 in June 2016.

3 – Sri Lanka won the last three ODI matches they played during the Tri-Series in January that included Bangladesh and Zimbabwe. However, they won only four of their last 20 ODI matches including those hat-trick victories.

8South Africa have won each of their last eight ODI matches against Sri Lanka. The last instance when Saffers lost an ODI to Sri Lanka was way back in July 2014 in Pallekele.

9 – South Africa have won other nine of their last 20 ODI matches they played in the last 18 months. They lost the 6-match ODI series at home against India 1-5, their only ODI assignment in 2018 thus far.

60.13 – Hashim Amla has a batting average of 60.13 in the 15 ODI innings against Sri Lanka. His average is the best for any player with 400 and more runs in the SL-SA ODI matches. Amla scored 902 runs, the most among the current players with the help of five centuries, while no other player has scored more than three tons in SL-SA ODIs.

3860 – Quinton de Kock needs 140 more runs to complete 4000 runs in ODI cricket. The keeper-batsman will be the joint 3rd quickest to 4000 ODI runs if he scores those 140 runs in his next ODI innings and the joint 4th fastest if he gets there in three innings.

8931 – Upul Tharanga has scored 8931 runs in International cricket thus far. The left-hander is 69 runs away from becoming the 9th Sri Lankan to complete 9000 International runs.

17834 – Hashim Amla is 166 runs away from completing 18000 runs in International cricket while the South African (8872) skipper is 128 runs short of 9000 runs across all International formats.
