Sri Lankan cricketer slapped with one-year suspension

Sri Lankan leg-spinner Jeffrey Vandersay has been punished with a one-year suspension by Sri Lanka Cricket. He has also been fined 20 percent of his annual contract fee. The Lankans toured the Windies earlier for a three-match Test series. The Windies won the first match in Trinidad. Thereafter, they held on for a draw in St Lucia.

Nevertheless, the visitors came back to win the third and final Test in Barbados. Meanwhile, Vandersay was also a part of the Test squad and his tour ended on June 23 prior to the last match. He couldn’t report back to the team hotel after a night out following which he was charged with misconduct and disciplinary issue.

The tweaker also admitted his wrongdoing as per reports in ESPNCricinfo. While the ban applies to only international cricket, any code of misconduct in the next 12 months will see him getting banned from all forms of cricket for one year.

“Vandersay was imposed with the punishment, following the player’s admission of guilt over the incident. SLC has also informed the player that during the period of serving the aforesaid suspended sentence, any breach of the contractual obligation shall be severely dealt with together with the suspension.” the statement by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) mentioned.

Lankan cricket in the stranglehold of controversies

Sri Lankan cricket has been marred by controversies in the last couple of months. Dinesh Chandimal, the Lankan captain was charged with the accusation of ball-tampering. He was seen applying some undesired object on the leather on the second day of Sri Lanka’s match against the Windies at Queens Park Oval in Trinidad. Their players were agitated and refused to take the field on the third day.

Subsequently, the play was halted for 90 minutes after which proceedings got underway. Chandimal was banned for the final match and was fined 100 percent of his match fees. He is also not playing in the ongoing Test series against South Africa.
