Meghalaya has had some good time during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2019-20 as they registered a couple of memorable wins at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. They registered their maiden win in the T20 format when they defeated the senior North-East opponent Assam. Meghalaya chased down the target of 109 with seven balls to spare. Their biggest moment came on Friday where they thumped the hosts, Mumbai, the most successful domestic team in Indian history.

Their campaign was set to conclude on Sunday where they were slated to face Mizoram. Dwaraka Ravi Teja, who starred with an unbeaten 61 against Mumbai, scored fifty in this match as well. Abhay Negi walked to bat at the start of 18th over when Meghalaya were 149/4 and set for a strong finish. He moved to 20 off 8 balls with two sixes prior to the final over. Negi scored a boundary on the first ball of the over and a couple on the no-ball that followed. Starting from the free-hit delivery, Abhay smashed four maximums in as many deliveries.

With this effort, he raised his fifty in only 14 balls. The last ball of the innings was a dot but Negi’s efforts helped Meghalaya finish on 207/4. The 14-ball fifty by Abhay Negi is now the quickest fifty in the history of Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy. The record was owned by Robin Uthappa who needed only 15 balls for his fifty against Andhra in 2011. Overall, this knock stands as the joint 2nd fastest fifty by an Indian in the Twenty20 format. Yuvraj Singh’s 12-ball fifty in 2007 WT20 still remains a world record.

KL Rahul got to fifty in only 14 deliveries during the 2018 IPL while playing for Kings XI Punjab. Rahul’s fifty set the record for the quickest half-century in the history of IPL. The 14-ball fifties by Rahul and Negi are the fastest in T20 cricket on Indian soil. Only four players till date have scored the fifties in fewer than 14 balls in this format. Meghalaya won the game by 25 runs as Mizoram finished with 182/2 in their 20 overs. Taruwar Kohli scored a 59-ball 90 while KB Pawan struck 72 off 46 balls to bring down the losing margin.
