Australia and England clashed in the first quarter-final of the ongoing ICC U19 Cricket World Cup in New Zealand on Tuesday. The encounter was immensely low scoring completely in contrast to what has transpired in the tournament so far. Australia, after opting to bat first were skittled out for a paltry total of 127 as their opponents fancied their chances to qualify for the semi-finals of the competition. However, the young leggie Lloyd Pope had different ideas who shattered records with the ball in hand and won the game for his country.
Pope spun a web around the Brits after coming on to bowl as the first change bowler and turned the tables around on their opposition. He kept on picking wickets in every over and created panic in England camp. They had no answers to his variations and succumbed to the pressure created by him failing to apply themselves in the middle. They lost wickets like ninepins and never recovered being bowled out for 96 runs only.
Lloyd Pope, however, went on to create a world record as well as registering second-best figures at the U19 level in ODIs. He finished with a sensational spell of 8/35 in 9.4 overs and was obviously awarded Man of the Match.
Indian bowler leads the charts
The left arm pacer Irfan Pathan is the holder of the proud record. He had registered the mindboggling figures of 9/16 against Bangladesh in Lahore way back in 2003. He was then regarded as ‘King of Swing’ bowling and even went on play for his national side as well. Pathan then picked a hat-trick against Pakistan at the international level in Test cricket in the very first level to extend his dominance further over the batsmen.
The likes of Trent Boult and Wayne Parnell are also in this list who went on make it big at the highest level at the later stages of their career. Australian bowlers are making it big in the ongoing tournament as Jason Ralston recently picked 7/15 against Papua New Guinea on 19 January. The only other Indian to rattle the opposition during his U19 days is Abu Nechim who registered the figures of 6/9 also against Bangladesh in 2007.
