Stats: England adds to the historical progression of ODI team totals

England recorded the highest team total in ODIs in the third ODI of the series against Pakistan at Trent Bridge in Nottingham. English batsmen put on a scintillating batting display to break Sri Lanka’s 10-year-old record of the highest team total by one run.

Opener Alex Hales was the key in achieving the record feat as he scored a 122-ball 171 at a strike-rate excess of 140. He also recorded for the highest individual score by an English batsman in ODI cricket, as he went past Robin Smith’s unbeaten 167 he had scored against Australia in 1993.

After the dismissal of Hales and Joe Root (85), England skipper Eoin Morgan and wicket-keeper batsmen Jos Buttler made sure that the team ended the innings on a high. Buttler smashed a 51-ball 90 and Morgan scored a 57 off 27 balls. Buttler’s 22-ball fifty also went into the record books as it is the fastest half-century for an English cricketer in One Day International (ODI) cricket.

Needing six runs off the last over to break Sri Lanka’s record for the highest team total, Morgan and Buttler almost messed it up, but with the boundary of the last ball of the innings, Buttler ensured that his team achieved the feat. With 53 fours and 16 sixes in the match, England cracked a total of 59 boundaries in the match.

In reply, Pakistan was never in a position to offer any kind of challenge to the England total and the hosts won the match by 169 runs.
