Stats: Ravichandran Ashwin completes 250 wickets in Test cricket in Asia

Ravichandran Ashwin continues to bag records in Test cricket as the recent one he set was completing 250 wickets in the Asian continent. Thus, the Indian off-spinner became only the 12th player to pick up 250 or more wickets in a continent in Tests. Out of the 12 players, six have done it in Asia including Ashwin.

From India, four players including Ashwin have picked up over 250 wickets, all of them achieving this feat in Asia only. Anil Kumble holds the record for most wickets taken by an Indian in a single continent in the longer format as he picked up 419 wickets in Asia. Kumble is ranked 2nd in the overall list as his tally of 419 as he stands behind Muttiah Muralitharan’s 612 wickets in Asia which are the most by any one in a continent.

Most wickets in Test cricket in Asia:

Ashwin, who was playing in his 39th Test in Asia, became the quickest to complete 250 Test wickets in a continent. He broke the record of his former coach and Indian leading wicket-taker in the Test cricket, Anil Kumble, who took 46 Test for completing 250 wickets in Asia.

Among the 12 players who have picked 250+ wickets in a continent, only 5 players including Ashwin have taken fewer than 50 matches to complete the milestone. However, in terms of innings taken, Ashwin falls behind Muralitharan, who took 76 innings while Ashwin completed the feat in the 77th Test innings in Asia.
