Stats: Scotland and Oman make it to the T20 World Cup 2020 with special performances

Scotland and Oman are the last set of teams from the Qualifier tournament to confirm their spot in the ICC 2020 Men’s T20 World Cup to be hosted by Australia. Scotland came up with a power-packed batting performance against the home team, the United Arab Emirates. They posted a huge total of 198/6 in their 20 overs and bowled the UAE out for just 108.

Oman, who batted first in this competition for the first time, were reduced to 42/6 against Hong Kong. Opener Jatinder Singh scored an unbeaten 67 to take his team to 134/7. He along with Naseem Khushi (26* off 9) added 50* for the 8th wicket in only 19 balls. Bilal Khan’s opening spell reduced Hong Kong to 18/5 and were eventually limited to only 122/9 in the chase.

Jatinder bats through for Oman:

1 – Jatinder Singh became the first player to bat throughout a T20I innings and remain unbeaten for Oman. During the game against Canada last week, Jatinder recorded the first unbeaten T20I innings by an Oman opener. He scored 68* off 39 balls during their run chase of 145 in only 14.5 overs.

67* – Jatinder Singh finished on 67* where none of the remaining top seven batsmen in his team even got 5 runs. Only once before a player scored a fifty in International cricket while none of the remaining top seven batters even made 5 runs. Daan van Bunge of Netherlands scored 62 against India during the CWC 2003 game.

A Berrington special:

266.66 – Richie Berrington’s batting strike rate of 266.6 during his 18-ball 48 is the highest in International cricket for Scotland. [Min: 40 runs/15 balls] The previous highest was 262.5 by Michael Leask during the 2014 Aberdeen ODI against England where he scored 42 off 16 balls.

Berrington needed two runs from two balls to record the fastest fifty ever for Scotland before he got bowled attempting a sweep shot. Richie’s 20-ball fifty in an ODI against Ireland in 2011 is the fastest recorded fifty for Scotland in any format.

Bilal goes past Mendis:

16 – Bilal Khan of Oman has taken 16 wickets from 8 matches in this series; the most by any player in a series/tournament in the T20I format. Ajantha Mendis, across six games during the 2012 WT20, and Jan Frylinck, during the current tournament, have bagged 15 wickets apiece. Frylinck still has two games to play while Bilal gets has only one.

In these 8 games, Oman picked 64 wickets which are the most for a team in a T20I series/tournament. Namibia and Netherlands have taken 60 and 59 wickets respectively in this tournament and occupy the 2nd and 3rd places in the overall list.

Oman’s great comeback:

42/6 – Oman’s total of 42/6 is the joint 3rd lowest score at the fall of 6th wicket from which a team won a T20I game. Papua New Guinea were 19/6 against Kenya on Sunday before where they won by 45 runs.

Ireland were reduced to 41/6 by Bermuda in the 2008 Belfast T20I which was a 9-over fixture and the hosts won it by 4 runs on DL method. Hours after PNG’s win over Kenya, Portugal won a T20I against Gibraltar after being 42/6 in the 108-run chase.

15.78 – The run rate for the 8th wicket 50-run partnership between Jatinder Singh and Naseem Khushi. Only two pairs shared fifty-run stands in T20I cricket at a higher run-rate for the 7th or a lower wicket. Mike Hussey and Mitchell Johnson added 53* off 16 balls at 19.87 in the 2010 WT20 semis against Pakistan for the 8th wicket.

Earlier in 2018, Zimbabwe’s Brandon Mavuta and Peter Moor added 53 from only 19 deliveries at 16.73 in the 2018 T20I against South Africa also for the 8th wicket.

55 – Oman and Hong Kong collectively scored only 55 runs for their first five wickets in this match; the 4th lowest aggregate in a T20I before losing 5th wicket. Lowest is 42 during the 2014 Colombo T20I between Nepal and Hong Kong.
