Stats: Youngest players to take a 5-wicket haul in T20 cricket
Afif Hossain, the 17-year old off-spinner from Bangladesh set a Twenty20 record becoming the youngest to bag a 5-wicket haul. Playing in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) for Rajshahi Kings, Afif became the first Bangladeshi to take 5 wickets in a game in the BPL history. Afif, who was making his debut in T20 cricket, picked up his first wicket off the 3rd ball he bowled in Chittagong Vikings’ innings.
By the end of the game, he became the first Bangladeshi and 17th player in overall to pick up a 5-fer on T20 debut. Afif’s figures of 5/21 are the 3rd best in BPL history and only the 7th instance of a bowler picking up a 5-wicket haul in the tournament.
During the game, Afif Hossain picked up the big wicket of Chris Gayle, who was out bowled. Afif’s 4th and last over was a double-wicket maiden helping him to set the record.
Before him, the youngest player to pick up a 5-wicket haul in T20s was Pakistan’s Zia-ul-Haq, who did it in 2012 at an age of 17 years and 109 days. Afif aged 17 years and 72 days coming into this game. In fact, Zia-ul-Haq’s 5-fer also came on his T20 debut.
