The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have always been one of the most popular franchises in the Indian Premier League (IPL). As they made a comeback in 2018 after a two-year long hiatus, it seemed as though they’d never been out of the game in the first place. On Sunday (May 13), the MS Dhoni-led side became the second team to qualify for the playoffs and head coach Stephen Fleming is happy beyond measure.
He took to Twitter and expressed his elation at the team’s success and wished all the franchises good luck for the remaining games. Chennai defeated the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by 8 wickets on Sunday to enter the playoffs in style. They currently hold 16 points in 12 games with a Net Run Rate (NRR) of +0.383.
CSK’s success story in IPL 2018
Fleming’s joy is understandable as CSK had been at the receiving end of a lot of backlash after the IPL 2018 auction. Their decision to include senior players like Harbhajan Singh, Imran Tahir and Shane Watson had drawn the ire of fans and critics, who’d termed it to be a team full of senior citizens. However, that is exactly what has worked for the CSK as the abundant experience of their players, coupled with some sensational performances has steered them to victories.
The New Zealander himself has been an excellent mentor for the team. Even in the face of extreme criticism, he defended the team management’s choices and called each of their players “a valuable asset” and insisted on the importance they lay on experience. He’s also lavished praise on Dhoni time and again for his intent, commitment and impeccable power hitting.
Here’s what Stephen Fleming posted:
Always great to see the ‘Q’ beside our teams name however it’s only the first step in what has been the most even IPL to date. Big final week ahead so good luck to all.

CSK, barring four defeats, have been without an ounce of fault. Be it Ambati Rayudu or Shane Watson up the batting order, MS Dhoni as the perennial finisher, Mr consistent Suresh Raina, Dwayne Bravo with his insane catching abilities in the field or youngsters like Deepak Chahar doing superbly with the ball, they’re one of the most balanced sides in the tournament and consequently, richly successful. Their next match will be against the Delhi Daredevils (DD) in New Delhi on Friday (May 18).
