Earlier this year, shocking revelations had been made by the Rising Pune Supergiants after a dismal season in the previous edition of the IPL. The most successful captain of Indian cricket, Mahendra Singh Dhoni was removed from captaincy by the decision makers of the Pune franchise.

As a result of this intrepid move by the Supergiants, Australian Test captain Steven Smith was handed over the captaincy for the entire season of the IPL. The PR team of the Rising Pune Supergiants is leaving no stone unturned to woo the fans by giving an entirely different flavour of Smith. Smith, too, has been actively participating in the promotional events of the franchise.

In a recent event, Smith was seen dressed in a traditional Marathi attire and trying to gain support from the Punekars by addressing, “aaplya team la support kara”, in Marathi. He  was accompanied by team mate Ajinkya Rahane who looked very pleased to see Smith dressed up in such a way. Yesterday, Rahane tweeted a post with an image with Smith dressed entirely in Maharashtrian attire with the caption, “What do you think of @stevesmith49 ‘s new Puneri avatar? We are loving it!”

Celebrated cricket journalist and author, Sunandan Lele tweeted video with the caption “Steve Smith emotional connect with Puneites and that too in Local language Marathi”

Steven Smith is technically playing his 4th season with a Pune franchise. Earlier, Smith was part of the Pune Warriors India for the 2012 and 2013. This was during a time when he was finding his feet in the international arena. Therefore, his fascination for the Maharashtrian team can be understood.

The Rising Pune Supergiants are set to host the Maharashtra Derby in their home ground Pune on 6th of April.  Along with Steve Smith, many Australians are a part of the Supergiants namely, Mitchell Marsh, Adam Zampa, Usman Khawaja and Aussie pacer Scott Boland.
