The England cricket team rattled the visiting Windies side by an innings and 209 runs under three days of the 1st Day and Night Test match at Birmingham. And the moment of the match was Stuart Broad rooting off Kemar Roach’s off-stump. The visitors were 134/7, following on by a massive scoreline. Roach batting on 5 could not get the bat to ball and in the process lost his wicket.
Both the Pacers – Broad and James Anderson were on song. Anderson picked up three wickets in the 1st innings, while Broad bagged three in the second. The West Indian side struggled to read the pink ball and were seen at bay. Former England skipper Alastair Cook was adjudged the Man of the Match for his match winning 243. Cook was at his best, playing the silken drives apart from pulling the short ones and leaving out the odd ones out.
Captain Joe Root continued his good form from the series against South Africa and scored a gritty 136, including 22 boundaries. Dawid Malan scored his career best 65, as England posted 514/8 on the board. For Windies, Roston Chase bagged four wickets. Windies were shot down for 136 in the first innings. Jermaine Blackwood, the middle-order batsman scored an unbeaten 79 and was the lone man to battle it out from one end.
It was a special day for Broad, who went past the legendary Ian Botham and is currently the second highest wicket-taker for England in Test cricket, with 384 wickets. Broad’s partner in crime Anderson is at the top with 492 wickets. It was a memorable day for Broad as Botham is the idol of the pacer.
Post the game, Broad said,”It’s a special day. Ian Botham has been a hero of mine. I used to watch him play. He had a great influence on me. He gave me my Test cap in 2007 but six months before that I got a call up to the West Indies and he was there. He gave me advice, saying, ‘You’re in this position because you’ve performed for your county so just relax and don’t put extra pressure on yourself’. That advice is something I’ve always tried to hold on to.”
