West Indies head coach Stuart Law opted to give a very diplomatic answer when asked to comment on the Ben Stokes fiasco recently. The English all-rounder was arrested in Bristol on Monday following an ‘incident’ in the city. Apparently, it was a brawl that saw the all-rounder getting arrested, albeit with no charges imposed on him.

However, what the arrest potentially resulted in was his exclusion from the England squad for the final two ODIs against West Indies. Opener Alex Hales was also excluded from the squad for the same reason as he is expected to be helping the police with the further investigations. While the English skipper Eoin Morgan sees this as an opportunity for others, there are a few who are concerned about the Ashes.

Different players have different takes on the issue. Former England captain Michael Vaughan blasted Stokes for his irresponsible nature. There were others like Kevin Pietersen who were worried about the England squad being picked for the upcoming Ashes. The man himself, Ben Stokes, in a recent interview published in The Times magazine on Saturday, had mentioned he would never lose his calm on the field.

Off the field, he cannot refrain from having drinks, he had claimed. “There’s adrenaline there, but I’d never get close to punching someone. I’m 26, not 14. I don’t have to drink Diet Cokes with dinner,” he had quoted.

Law’s response

Well, in all fairness, the most impactful response in the case came from West Indies coach Stuart Law. Law mentioned that the players get paid highly these days. But they should know they have a responsibility to uphold with that amount of money.

“Professional cricketers get paid a good wage these days … they get decent money and along with that comes responsibility,” quoted Stuart Law.
