Former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar has lauded the Indian cricket team following their impressive win over the visiting England team in the third Test at Mohali. The match did not go into the fifth day as the formalities connected towards the Indian win were completed on the fourth day’s play. Gavaskar believed that this was a near-to-perfect performance by what was a clinical Indian team.

By virtue of their win at Mohali, the Indian team not only defied history but also have an unassailable lead in the series with England left only with hopes of securing a draw. “This is a near-to-perfect performance by the Indian team and I will give 9.75 out of 10 to India for their performance in the Mohali Test,” he told NDTV.

Sunil Gavaskar also believed that the Brits were never in a position of securing a win in the match and were on the back foot from the very first session of play. Moreover, Gavaskar stated that there could be no excuses for England on such a wicket given the fact that these were England-like conditions in Mohali and added that they should have performed better.

“England were never in a position to win the game. They had won the toss and lost the opportunity to take a good lead in the first innings. They have not played good cricket and they have to accept it” he said.

“There is no excuse for England for the conditions or the pitch. These were England-like conditions and they should have performed better,” he added.

Gavaskar went on to add that the Indian spinners were key in these conditions as well. “Indian spinners were brilliant with the bat. The seven, eight and nine numbers for India were the key, as they contributed with the bat and because of them India got past England’s first innings total,” the former India captain further said.
