The COVID-19 pandemic continues to wreak havoc without any respite over India, which is suffering from a deadly second wave driven by a new variant that is found to be more infectious and deadly than the previous strain. The numbers suggest a gloomy picture with India consecutively recording over 4,00,000 cases over the last few days and a daily death toll in thousands.

The Indian government opted to roll out vaccines to everyone aged 18 or above, although the nation is reportedly running out of Covid-19 vaccines as the government had set plans in place for mass drives. Notably, the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League had to be suspended too, after Covid cases emerged in different bio-bubbles across different cities before the BCCI and the IPL Governing Council took the hard step of postponing the tournament indefinitely.

With the world jolted with the pandemic, many organizations and individuals have tried their best to contribute and help the sufferers around by making contributions in their capacity. A host of cricketers and organizations have come forward in the recent past to help India’s Covid fight and the most recent in the list is IPL franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad, who have decided to donate INR 30 Crore to “provide relief to those affected by the second wave” of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Tweeting from their official handle, SRH wrote: “Sun TV (SunRisers Hyderabad) is donating Rs.30 crores to provide relief to those affected by the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic.”

Many cricketers have come forward

Australian cricketers Pat Cummins and Brett Lee have made generous contributions to help India with the former donating 50,000 US Dollars (nearly INR 37 lakhs) for oxygen supplies in India, while the latter made a cryptocurrency donation of one Bitcoin (nearly INR 41 lakhs) for the same cause. Taking inspiration from them, the Estonian Cricket Association came forward and donated INR 1 Lakh in Bitcoins (0.027 BTC).

Apart from them, many cricketers including Sachin Tendulkar, Irfan Pathan, Yusuf Pathan, Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya, Jayadev Unadktat, Nicholas Pooran, amongst others, have also contributed in different ways to assist their fellow brethren in these challenging times. Apart from individual donations, IPL franchises Rajasthan Royals and Delhi Capitals have also made notable contributions.
