President Ram Nath Kovind on Thursday approved the list of 85 Padma awards to given this year. The list includes and sports icons like multiple world champion cueist Pankaj Advani, ace men’s singles shuttler Kidambi Srikanth who had a dream year and none other than former captain M.S. Dhoni to be honoured with Padma Bhushan.

Keeping its promise of honouring “unsung heroes”, the Padma Shri award will be given to other sportspersons like 2017 World Weightlifting Champion in the 48kg category, Saikhom Mirabai Chanu and former Asian Games gold medallist tennis player Somdev Devvarman. There is also India’s first Paralympic gold medalist, Murlikant Petkar in the list won an individual gold medal in the 1972 Summer Paralympics, in Heidelberg, Germany.

Among the many people who congratulated the awardees was Suresh Raina who took to Twitter to convey his wishes. He said, “Congratulations, @srikidambi and  @msdhoni bhai on being conferred with the #PadmaAwards. Two giants in their respective sporting fields. Well deserved indeed. #PadmaBhushan #PadmaShri.”

Here’s what Suresh Raina had to say

Dhoni has been the recipient of various awards, including the ICC ODI Player of the Year award in 2008 and 2009 (the first player to win the award twice), the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award in 2007 and the Padma Shri, India’s fourth highest civilian honour in 2009. Considered as the country’s most successful cricket captain, Dhoni led India to two World Cup triumphs — in the inaugural ICC World Twenty20 held in South Africa in September 2007 and the 2011 ICC ODI World Cup. India also won ICC Champions Trophy under him. It was under his captaincy that India climbed to No. 1 in the ICC Test Rankings in December 2009.

MS Dhoni has landed in Johannesburg to prepare for the limited overs’ campaign that is set to begin with the 1st ODI on February 1 at Durban. Meanwhile, Suresh Raina has just ended his stint with Uttar Pradesh after they lost the spot to the finals to Delhi by 4 runs in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He returned to form after a stunning 126* against Bengal followed by consecutive half centuries against Tamil Nadu and Baroda. The two will be seen playing together in this year’s IPL with the Chennai Super Kings returning to the league. They have been retained by the franchise along with spin-all rounder Ravindra Jadeja.
