The Indian Premier League has witnessed some breathtaking catches, and you could put Suresh Raina’s effort right up there in the lot. They don’t come better than what the skipper himself pulled off in the very first over of the Gujarat Lions’ clash against the Rising Pune Supergiant.

In the very third ball of the match, veteran bowler Praveen Kumar got the ball to nip back into Ajinkya Rahane. The batsman chose to cut the ball only to find Raina in the lone slip. Credit must go to PK, who got the ball to move away from Rahane in the first two deliveries but bowled an inswinger in the third. Expecting similar movement, Rahane selected the cut shot.

Kumar’s third delivery was too close to cut of course. Rahane was cramped for room and the ball took a thick outside edge off Rahane’s bat and was traveling quickly. Captain of the Gujarat Lions Suresh Raina, who had placed himself at first slip, anticipated the ball to go towards his right. Raina had already taken a step towards his right, only to realize that Rahane has edged the ball between him and the keeper.

Within a split second, Suresh Raina then threw his body to his left and stuck out his left hand. Although he had very little time to react, Raina was able to latch onto this one perfectly.

Right leg in the air, left hand behind his body line, and Raina executed a screamer of a catch. Without the slightest fumble, Suresh Raina pulled off a one-hander to see the dangerous Rahane walking back to the hut.

Raina has been in the business of enthralling crowds with his terrific catching on many occasions before. Last year, a high-flying Suresh Raina took perhaps the catch of the season to dismiss KKR’s Suryakumar Yadav. Once again, it was in the very first over of the innings that his acrobatics were on display.

It will take some catching from the fielders in this game to top Raina’s grab, who is currently well on course of bagging the catch of the match award. Suresh Raina can also fancy laying his hands on the catch of the tournament award with his ripper today.
