Chennai Super Kings’ swashbuckling batsman Suresh Raina’s departure from the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League, slated to begin on September 19 across three venues namely Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, has raised a lot of eyebrows in the cricket world. After 13 members of the CSK contingent, including two players namely Deepak Chahar and Ruturaj Gaikwad, tested positive for the novel coronavirus, Raina travelled back to India citing personal reasons.

Many speculations and rumours are floating in the media regarding Raina’s exit from the tournament. Though initially it was believed that the increase in the number of coronavirus cases in CSK’s camp forced the 33-year-old to withdraw his name from the tournament, many reports have now suggested that the cricketer wasn’t satisfied with his room as it did not have a balcony.

If reports are to be believed, Raina might never return back to play for the Super Kings, captained by MS Dhoni. Some of the top officials of the team are irked over Raina’s behaviour and are not in favour of taking him back in the team. This means there are chances that the cricketer might be back in auction for the first time since 2008. However, Raina has till now not given any official clarification regarding his exit from the cash-rich league.

Suresh Raina to lose a handsome amount of money

The Uttar Pradesh stalwart is also going to incur mammoth monetary loss owing to his decision of skipping the 2020 edition of the league. Raina was to receive a whopping salary of Rs. 11 crore INR for his stint in IPL 2020. As per the league’s rule, the second retained player is entitled to Rs. 11 crore per year. In 2018, CSK had retained MS Dhoni (15 crore), Raina (11 crore) and Ravindra Jadeja (7 crore).

Apart from the salary, the 33-year-old will also miss out on ‘reward money’ which is earned by winning Man of the Match award, best catch of the match award and others. The CSK’s vice-captain is likely to incur a loss of Rs 15 crore by missing IPL 2020.

In the inaugural edition of the Indian Premier League, CSK had bought Raina for a price of USD 6,50,000 (nearly 4 crore now). Since then he has been a regular feature in the playing XI of the team and is also only behind Indian skipper Virat Kohli in terms of the highest run-getter in the history of the T20 league.
