Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are struggling with injuries to key players in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL). Their pace spearhead Deepak Chahar got ruled out recently, and on Thursday (April 21), they were dealt with another blow as New Zealand pacer Adam Milne was also ruled out due to a hamstring injury.  The four-time champions have signed young Sri Lanka pacer Matheesha Pathirana as his replacement for the rest of the season.

For the unversed, Matheesha is a pace bowler who made the headlines during the U19 World Cup 2020 game against India. He delivered a rather innocuous delivery while bowling to Yashasvi Jaiswal which was called wide as well. However, the delivery clocked an astonishing 175 kph which turned a lot of heads.  However, it was soon revealed that it was a glitch in the system and Pathirana had not bowled with that speed.

The ongoing IPL season is having a special award for the bowlers delivering the fastest ball of the match which is sponsored by food delivery app Swiggy. As soon as Matheesha Pathirana was named as Adam Milne’s replacement in the CSK squad, funny tweets flood around his speed while few stating that Umran Malik and Lockie Ferguson will have competition now.

Matheesha Pathirana has played only T20 matches

Matheesha Pathirana in known as Junior Malinga in Sri Lanka thanks to his slinging bowling action. It will be interesting to see if he will get a chance to make his IPL debut for CSK in the near future. He has been signed by the defending champions for his base price of INR 20 lakh. But the 19-year-old is not much experienced in terms of playing cricket at the senior level. He has so far played 1 List A and 2 T20 matches in his career picking up two wickets in the shortest form of the game.

He will team up with another Sri Lankan bowler Mahessha Theekshana in the CSK squad, the spin bowler who is doing well for the Men in Yellow this season picking wickets in the powerplay.

Here’s how Twitter reacted to his signing:
