Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag is a busy man nowadays. After finding a place in a three-member cricket committee set up by the Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) under a new president in Rajat Sharma, he has also bagged the role of the batting coach for the Maratha Arabians in the second edition of the T10 Cricket League in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), to be played in November.

In the inaugural edition last year, Sehwag, 39, led the Arabians though it did not quite work out the way he’d have wanted. But that did not lessen the appeal of the only Indian player in the 10-over cricket format and the Arabians’ management’s decision to rope in as the batting coach this year made it evident.

Difficult to imagine the team without Sehwag

“We have decided to bring in Sehwag as the batting coach, and it is difficult to imagine the Maratha Arabians without Sehwag — who led the team last year,” Maratha Arabians’ co-owner Parvez Khan told Sportstar from Dubai on July 26.

Khan said the former dashing batsman agreed to take up the new role once he was told about it by the former himself. “He wanted to help out the batsmen and we are looking forward to it,” Khan said.

The team will continue to be mentored by former Pakistani great Wasim Akram. Rashid Khan, the sensational spinner from Afghanistan, has joined the franchise as the key player for this edition.

The inaugural edition of the T10 league was played in mid-December 2016 and the title was lifted by Kerala Kings led by English batsman Eoin Morgan. They beat Punjab Legends by 8 wickets in the final.

Sehwag had led the Arabians in only two group games though he batted in only one game in which he scored a golden duck. The Arabians won one of their two games in the group stages but lost to eventual champions Kerala Kings in the semi-final. Sehwag was bowled leg before by his former international rival Shahid Afridi in the match.
