The fourteenth day of action in the Vitality T20 Blast has treated us with another thriller. Only one game was played on the day and it was a South group encounter. Essex faced Hampshire at the County Ground in Chelmsford. This game kept the audience glued to the edge of their seats right till the last ball was bowled.

In the end, the game ended up being a tie as there is no ‘Super Overs’ in the league stages of the tournament. Hence, both teams shared one point each. Here is exactly how the things progressed in this thriller of a game.

Essex vs Hampshire – South Group

After winning the toss in this game, Hampshire opted to bat first. But, they were struck with a big blow early in the game as their skipper James Vince was dismissed right in the second over of the innings. Matthew Quinn picked his wicket up. After this wicket fell, Colin Munro and Sam Northeast struck together in the middle and built a nice partnership. While Colin Munro took an aggressive approach to his innings, Sam Northeast’s approach was quite radical. Munro scored 38 off 17 balls. Northeast stayed out there till the end and was unbeaten on 73.

Liam Dawson, with a 32-ball 32 towards the end played the role of an anchor. In the end, the team scored 170 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in their quota of 20 overs. Adam Zampa picked up two wickets. Chasing this target down, the batsmen of Essex contributed equally to get closer to the target. Daniel Lawerence scored 49 runs while skipper Ryan ten Doeschate scored 23 runs.

Ravi Bopara was out there in the middle till the last over. The team required 13 runs in the last over to win the game. Bopara hit a six off the first ball and took a single off the next. The third ball yielded a wicket. Bopara played a dot after that and then hit a four. He was run out off the last ball while attempting to complete the second run.

Brief Scores:

HAM: 170/5 in 20 overs (Sam Northeast 73*, Colin Munro 38, Adam Zampa 2/30)

ESS: 170/8 in 20 overs (Daniel Lawerence 49, Ravi Bopara 39, Chris Wood 3/27)
