T20 Blast 2018, Day 28: Round-up

Some intense action was on display in the five games that were played on the 28th day of the T20 Blast. Although one game yielded no result, it provided the fans with enough entertainment. Gloucestershire’s Ian Cockbain was truly unbelievable on the day with an unbeaten 123 which came off just 61 balls.

As far as the points table is concerned, Worcestershire is back to the top position in the North group after having bagged an impressive win in a low-scoring game. Further, with that thrilling knock from the willow of Cockbain, Gloucestershire propelled itself to the second position in the South group. Here is how things progressed on the 28th day of the T20 Blast.

Gloucestershire vs Middlesex – South Group

Gloucestershire managed to humble Middlesex by pocketing a huge 70-run win in this South group encounter in their home ground. After being put into bat first, the hosts lost their opener, Miles Hammond, early. Cockbain, who came in at No 3 took some time to settle in initially.

However, it did not take him more than 20 balls to launch his assault on the opposition. He took 29 balls to get to his half-century. But, in the next 24 balls, the 31-year-old reached his 100 at a staggering strike rate. With some cameos from the other batsmen, Gloucestershire put on a surreal total of 242 runs on the board.

These sort of targets are not often chased and it was no different for Middlesex. Although a majority of their batsmen got starts, they couldn’t really get anywhere close to the total. Even though they were not in the course of winning the game, Eoin Morgan and Eskinazi tried to put their best foot forward to at least get close to the target. But, Noema-Barnett picked 2 wickets in the 16th over to put the visitors on the backfoot. They only managed to get to 172 runs and lost the game by a massive 72 runs.

Result: Gloucestershire won by 70 runs.

Yorkshire vs Lancashire – North Group

Yorkshire won the toss and opted to bat first at their home ground. Opener Tom Kohler-Cadmore and David Willey played some brilliant knocks to get the team off to a good start. Willey scored 80 runs in just 43 balls. On this track, the par score would have been at least 200. But, losing wickets in pairs affected the teams’ scoring rate. Having lost 3 wickets in the final over of the game, Yorkshire could only get to 181 runs in 20 overs.

With this below-par total, on a belter of a track, it was always going to be tough for Yorkshire to defend the total. Also, their bowlers couldn’t pull off something very special. Hence, all it took was just 17.4 overs for Lancashire to chase the total down. K Brown scored a 34-ball 51 in this chase as they pouched a six-wicket win.

Worcestershire: 137/8 in 20 overs (Joe Clarke 76, Wayne Parnell 12, Viljoen 3/25)

Derbyshire: 121/7 in 20 overs (B Godleman 38, Wilson 35, Patrick Brown 2/25)

Result: Worcestershire won by 16 runs.

Warwickshire vs Nottinghamshire – North Group

Nottinghamshire: 152/8 in 20 overs (Samit Patel 41, S Mullaney 24, Hannon-Dalby 3/30)

Warwickshire: 156/4  in 16.2 overs (Ian Bell 54, de Grandhomme 49*, Harry Gurney 1/14)

Result: Warwickshire won by 6 wickets.

Surrey vs Sussex – South Group

Sussex: 159/2 in 13 overs (Luke Wright 55, Laurie Evans 48*, Rikki Clarke 2/24)
