On the sixth day of the Vitality T20 Blast, there were two South group games that were played. In the first encounter, Surrey faced Essex at the Kennington Oval in London. In the second game, it was Hampshire against Sussex at The Rose Bowl in Southampton.

Surrey won the game against Essex by a huge margin of 39 runs. Furthermore, this was also the first win of this season for Surrey. Sussex continued with their good form to win their third consecutive game. Hence, courtesy of this win, they moved to the top of the points table with 6 points from 3 games.

Surrey vs Essex – South Group

Surrey won the toss and opted to bat first. They put up a massive total of 222 runs on the board for the loss of 4 wickets in their 20 overs. Aaron Finch scored 58 off 33 balls opening the innings. Ben Foakes with 56 off 35 balls provided the perfect platform for the final five overs flourishes. It was Ollie Pope and Rikki Clarke with scored 31 and 48 respectively off 20 balls each who helped the team post a massive total. Adam Zampa was the pick of the bowlers in this high scoring innings. He gave away just 20 runs and picked 2 wickets in his 4 overs.

Chasing such a huge total was never going to be easy. Although the openers provided the team with a good start, others couldn’t really carry on. The run out of the in-form Varun Chopra (67 off 46 balls) was the turning point in the game. Apart from the top three, none of the other batters could cross 20 runs as the team fell short by 39 runs. Mathews Pillans and Gareth Batty picked 3 wickets each.

Brief Scores:

SUR: 222/4 in 20 overs (Aaron Finch 58, Ben Foakes 56, Adam Zampa 2/20)

ESS: 183/7 in 20 overs (V Chopra 67, A Wheater 30, M Pillans 3/34)
